A Sure Foundation

foundation

As we step into 2026 together, I’m preaching two messages on spiritual foundations:   God’s Word, and Prayer (Jan. 11 and 18).   All that we do to apply our faith at home and at work and at school, etc., needs to rest on footings of the “vertical life”:  hearing from God (Scripture), and responding in praise, confession, thanks, and petitions (Prayer).  First things first.

Psalm 119 helps us see the multifaceted wonder of God’s Word (in fact, almost all of its 176 verses highlight the value of Scripture in one way or another).  Take some time and sit with Psalm 119, and let its sustained message encourage you.   Consider…

  • Keeping God’s word is the way of blessing (vv 1-2).
  • The word of God guards our purity (v 9).
  • Resist sin by filling your heart with God’s truth (v 11).
  • Take joy in God’s word—it’s treasure (vv 14, 16, 162).
  • Let the word draw your eyes away from vanities (vv 36-37).
  • Seeking God’s precepts brings freedom (v 45).
  • God speaks to us in the Scriptures uniquely when affliction has humbled us (vv 67, 71, 75).
  • The breadth and depth of the Word is great (v 96).
  • The Scriptures are sweeter than honey (v 103).
  • God’s truth illuminates the path before us (v 105).
  • The Bible is the remedy for hypocrisy (v 113).
  • God’s word is true—the parts and the whole (v 160).

Do you know the word of God?  Do you cherish the Lord’s life-giving, error-destroying, hope-building revelation?   May we never be accused of taking lightly the priceless gift of the Bible!
