To my Goshen family,
I shared the following ministry update during our services last Sunday: I’m planning to retire next year.
Cheryl and I have been thinking about this topic for a while, and our sense is that the time to take this step is approaching. I’ve explained to the Elders that I would like to step down in June of 2027. If it is helpful, in connection with the church’s search process, I could see making the transition a bit sooner or a bit later than that date.
In light of this development, the Elders are prepared to launch a pastoral search process very soon. The Lord knows how long it will take to complete the search and have a new Senior Pastor ready to begin, but estimates of a year or so are common.
It feels strange to share this update with you. I’ve had the privilege of serving as Senior Pastor here for 20 years, and I have been blessed and challenged and encouraged immensely in our ventures together! And I’m very thankful for your support all along the way. Still, there does come a time to step down, and we feel that it would be wise to prepare to take that step next year.
So, then, we begin a transition season together. Looking ahead, Lord willing, for the next year I’ll continue in my current ministry role. Then, looking further down the road into that season of life called “retirement,” Cheryl and I are not planning to relocate, and our desire is to be involved at Goshen long term in a lay capacity.
Please pray, giving thanks for how God has blessed Goshen through countless changes and challenges over the last 200 years, and seeking God’s guidance for our church as we follow Jesus now and in days to come.
Feel free to be in touch with me or with our Elders if you have any questions.
Your brother in Christ,
Pastor Peter
